STYLE ICON: Taylor, The Skinny Fashionista!

This week’s Style Icon is Taylor, also known as blogger of The Skinny Fashionista. Take a look behind her fashion sense and aspirations in life.
What is your name, age, and where are you from?
My name is Taylor, I’m nineteen years old, and I’m from North Carolina.
Describe the fashion scene in the city you live in?
There really isn’t a fashion scene, to be honest. People usually try to dress in what everyone else is wearing, or they literally just throw on clothes and go out. I see people all the time just dressed in sweatpants and tanks. I guess it’s the reason why I stand out so much and get stared at almost everywhere I go.
How is the fashion scene different compared to other major cities and fashion capitals?
In other major cities and fashion capitals, you can tell that people care about what they are wearing. People put a lot of detail into their outfits, where here people just throw on clothes and go.
Tell us a little about yourself and what sparked your interest in fashion.
Like I stated before, I’m nineteen years old and I am a college student studying Apparel Design with a minor in Journalism. My interest in fashion came along when I was about thirteen years old. I spent a lot of my time watching what my mother did with her fashion choices and that propelled me to want to dig further into fashion. My mother is my biggest inspiration.
What are your passions in life?
My passions in life is to finish college, attend grad school in New York, and eventually live there as a fashion stylist and a merchandiser. I really want to work behind the scenes with a lot of things.
Who is your personal style icon?
My personal style icon would definitely have to be Grace Jones. She’s so fierce and edgy with her clothing; she doesn’t care what people think. That’s the motto I go by, not caring what anyone has to say about what I’m wearing because at the end of the day, I’m living to please myself.
What influences your style when you’re creating an outfit?
My mood, music, and films. I love all indie films and vintage films, so the styles in them are usually something I keep inside of my head. I love music because while I’m taking my pictures, I often sing a certain song in my head that goes with the mood of the outfit.
What is the ultimate show piece in your closet?
My spiked Jeffrey Campbell Litas. Those things are dangerous if you’re not too careful, but they’re my favorite shoe to this day.
What do you splurge on?
I splurge a lot on shoes because sometimes you just have to. It’s hard to find cheap, decent looking shoes that aren’t the norm.
What do you skimp on?
I really skimp on bottoms for some reason
What’s one fashion piece that you hope to one day to call your own?
I really would like to own a pair of Jeffrey Campbell Coltranes. Man, those boots are sick.
If you could time travel back to any time era and explore the fashion scene, what would it be?
I would definitely travel back to the late 80’s/early 90’s. Females wore baggy clothes back then and could pull them off so well. Everything was all about being you — nobody was teased or picked at for wearing outlandish things.
It is now 2018, what will you be doing?
Well, I’ll be twenty four years old, so hopefully I’ll be established in my fashion career and living in a nice studio apartment in Soho that over looks the city and all of it’s inhabitants. I just want to be in New York.
What items are consisted in your “favorite” Summer outfit?
My new spiked sandal heels, my high waist black shorts, and a nice crop top.
What are your favorite designers and where do you shop?
I don’t really have a favorite designer, although I admire Kenzo’s work. I usually shop in thrift stores because I’m not really a high end girl. I like finding rare gems and you can pretty much only find those in thrift stores. Occasionally, I’ll shop online at places like Nasty Gal, Asos, and Topshop.
What tips do you have for those seeking fashion advice?
Just be YOU. Don’t try to be like anyone else or follow the trends of today because you’ll end up getting lost in them. Wear what makes you comfortable and speak through your clothing.

Is there anything else that you would like us to know about you?
I’m obsessed with Leonardo Dicaprio. Seriously.

She has aspirations to live in New York and pursue her dream career in fashion. With hard work and dedication, she is bound to go far.
